Renewables

Renewable and low-carbon technologies are good for the environment and can save you money, particularly with government financial incentives available. Renewable technologies can generate electricity, heat, or both.

Solar panels can be fitted to your roof. They convert radiation from sunlight into electricity. They do not require direct sunshine and so can generate electricity even on cloudy days. This energy can be used immediately by the household, stored in batteries for use later or fed back into the national electricity grid.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

ASHP extract heat from the outside air and transform it into useable heat within the home.  The pump works in the same way as a refrigerator, only in reverse.  Although the air temperature in Aberdeen city is generally quite low, ASHP can extract heat down to a outside temperatures of -15ᵒC. ASHP are compact units which can be fitted to the outside of most buildings.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)

GSHP extract heat from the ground and transform it into useable heat within the home.  The pump works in the same way as a refrigerator, only in reverse. GHSP use pipes buried in the ground to extract heat.  These pipes are installed either horizontally, a few feet below ground, or vertically.  Horizontal pipes require a reasonably large area of ground so may not be suitable for many properties within Aberdeen.  Vertically installed coils require boreholes to be drilled to a depth of several meters.

The majority of wind turbines require a large amount of open space are they are very large. However, there are smaller wind turbines available that can be fitted to the side of buildings.
